I was born and raised in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. My parents immigrated from Punjab (Northern India) in 1975 and I am the youngest of three.
In my teens, I developed a passion for filmmaking and writing. I was very introverted, and never imagined I would step out from behind the camera or read my own work publicly.
At 18, I moved to Chicago IL to start at Northeastern Illinois University. I focused on Communications and Media and was able to gain experience as an intern at some of the best newsrooms in Chicago (PBS, Chicago Tribune, FOX and WGN). It wasn't until Graduate School at DePaul University that I felt comfortable stepping in front of the camera for the first time to report on rising crime on the university campus. I put my inner introvert aside and stepped up because I knew getting that information out to students was more important than my insecurities. I still look at reporting the same way today. It's never about me.
Determined to use my skills to do something meaningful, I began to pursue hard news journalism. I started my own cable access news shows, and began working with some of the best investigators in Chicago. I went undercover into a Gay hate group, tracked serial killers and contributed to national crime programs as a writer and researcher.
My first news job out of Grad School took me to Rapid City, South Dakota where I anchored the morning news, covered crime/courts as well as complex issues on the Native American Reservation nearby.
I began to pursue Investigative Journalism after getting tired of reporting on the same crime day in and day out. I wanted to find the reason WHY bad things happened, WHO was responsible and WHAT could be done. I felt compelled to stand up for those who needed help and felt powerless. I wanted to hold the powerful accountable and improve the quality of life in my community by putting a spotlight on what was wrong and what could be better.
Nearly ten years later, I've been fortunate enough to be recognized for my investigative reporting with multiple awards and honors. I'm also proud to have gotten back thousands of dollars in refunds and returns for viewers who reached out for help. Through my work with KSDK's I-Team, we have also gotten laws & policies changed and legislation introduced.
